Ricky Gervais Will Again Host The Golden Globes

Wednesday, 16 November 2011 14:38

Today, in unsuprising would-be controversy related to pompous, overblown entertainment awards shows, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced that British comedian Ricky Gervais will host next year's ceremony.  This will be Gervais's third time wearing a suit and standing in front of many inebriated, sharply dressed rich people at the Globes.  Most folks are only thinking about his turn at the last ceremony, during which his sarcasm was apparently harsh enough to elicit sympathy for multimillionaire movie stars and had many viewers crying foul.

Jennifer Aniston is known for playing the sweet and cute girl next-door type, but she shatters that image in the new Warner Bros. comedy Horrible Bosses. The former Friends star spices up the big screen with her fowled mouth raunchy character that she fearlessly portrays.

In the movie, Aniston plays Dr. Julia Harris, a sexually crazed dentist who will stop at nothing to get her assistant Dale (Charlie Day) to sleep with her. Now most guys wouldn’t have a problem with this, but Dale is engaged and takes his relationship very seriously. The more he tells his boss he’s not going to give in to her demands, the more she harasses him. He’s miserable and wants to quit but can’t because he is a registered sex offender. His crime: peeing in a public school in the middle of the night.

Dale isn’t the only one having issues with his employer. His two best friends Nick (Jason Bateman) and Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) hate their bosses as well and the three buddies come up with a plan to kill them. Of course nothing goes right and the group of friends find themselves in situations they never thought they’d be in.

The movie also stars Kevin Spacey as Nick’s entitled and arrogant boss, Colin Farrell as Kurt’s cokehead employer, and Jamie Foxx as a self proclaimed badass that steers the guys right into trouble.

In the new R rated comedy Bad Teacher, Cameron Diaz plays Elizabeth Halsey, an unapologetic misanthrope whose primary goal is not to enrich the learning experience of her unlucky students, but to earn enough money to pay for breast implants.  Breast augmentation, she reasons, is her best bet at marrying a rich husband, such as idealistic trust fund substitute teacher Scott Delacorte (Justin Timberlake), and living the rest of her life in the lap of luxury.

At a press conference for the film in Beverly Hills, Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake joined director Jake Kasdan and co-stars Jason Segel, Lucy Punch, and Phyllis Smith to discuss their thoughts on education, women in comedy, calf implants, ensembles, orgies, the MPAA, and Bad Teacher.

There is an extensive canon of inspirational cinematic teachers who nobly open their students minds and positively alter the course of their lives, inspiring them to stand up on their desks to quote Walt Whitman and the like.  Elizabeth Halsey, the educator played by Cameron Diaz in the comedy Bad Teacher, is in no way similar to these teachers.  Instead, she's a hard-drinking, pot-smoking, foul-mouthed misanthrope whose primary ambition is to shack up with a trust-fund substitute, brought to nerdy life by Justin Timberlake.  Four new clips serve as handy introductions for both Diaz and Timberlake, as well as supporting players Jason Segel, Phyllis Smith, and Lucy Punch.

Now that Dunder Mifflin Regional Manager Michael Scott has departed NBC's The Office, your Steve Carell-fix will have to come from the former Daily Show correspondent's film appearances.  Burt Wonderstone, which would star Carell as the eponymous Las Vegas magician, has been seeking right director since talks with television veteran Charles McDougall ceased in early April.  According to Deadline, fellow TV director Don Scardino has signed on to make his feature directorial debut with Burt Wonderstone.

For any actor, crossing over from one specific genre to a different one can be a very tricky proposition but it is usually most difficult for comedians who want to show off their dramatic sides. Jamie Foxx and Robin Williams have both won Academy Awards for their efforts while funny men like Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler have had a harder time getting audiences to watch them be serious. Will Ferrell is best known for his work in comedies like Old School, Elf, and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, but the actor has taken a stab at dramedy before with the film Stranger Than Fiction. Now, fresh off the heels of his guest-starring role on TV’s The Office, the comedian tackles the comedy-drama genre one more time with his new film, Everything Must Go.

"Don't stop watching The Office, even though Steve Carell is leaving," NBC is saying to an audience with its collective eyebrow raised.  Not content with pleading, "Please, please stick with it through the end of the season," which will have several episodes after Carell's character Michael Scott leaves the Dunder Mifflin office, the network is relying on a cadre of guest stars as an insurance policy.  Will Ferrell has already begun his temporary stint as Regional Manager Deangelo Vickers, and now, Entertainment Weekly reports that Jim Carrey will interview for a management position during the season finale.

The distributor Lionsgate has announced that, inspired by the success of microbudget films like Paranormal Activity, it is launching a new initiative to make ten movies a year for under $2 million apiece.  Variety reports that the first three films to be produced as part the Lionsgate microbudget endeavor have been selected, and they include Rapturepalooza, which will star The Office's Craig Robinson as the Antichrist, who is attempting to wrest control of a sandwich cart and its owner's wife in post-Rapture America.

You know how The Office started out a British show co-created by and starring Ricky Gervais, then went global, with variations in America, France, Israel, Germany, and Chile, amongst others?  With our imperial disposition, it would be shocking if American shows didn't occasionally get the foreign treatment.  When Russia called for its own version of his show, Everybody Loves Raymond creator Phillip Rosenthal took a documentary crew with him to film the awkward clash of cultures.  The result is Exporting Raymond, which has been playing film festivals to rave reviews for months now.  Check out the trailer right here.
