Opening in theaters on March 2nd is the new comedy Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie, which is based on the popular Adult Swim series Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! Just like the series, the film stars Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim as themselves, while the two comedians also co-wrote and directed the movie together. Much like the series, the film features appearances by several famous actors and comedians including Zach Galifianakis (Due Date), Will Ferrell (Everything Must Go), Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park), John C. Reilly (Terri), Will Forte (MacGruber), Erica Durance (TV's Smallville), Twink Caplan (Clueless), Ray Wise (Robocop), William Atherton (Die Hard), Robert Loggia (Scarface), and Michael Gross (TV's Family Ties) as the Narrator.
IAR's Managing Editor Jami Philbrick recently had a chance to sit down with Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim to discuss Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie. The two comedians talked about their new film, the fictional research company that helped them develop it, their writing process, adapting their humor from the series for the big screen, the film's remarkable cast, and what type of film they would make if they really had a billion dollars.
Put on your lunacy caps, kids, because a full two-and-a-half-minute red band trailer for Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie is now online. The teaser released earlier this week was mostly text with just a hint of batshit crazy, but this new trailer is a double-barreled blast of strange befitting the first movie from Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, the non sequitur-spewing minds responsible for Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!. That series was one of the most surreal bits of programming ever featured on Adult Swim, and it appears Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar movie will maintain the surreal qualities and the cameos, while substantially upping the profanity and over the top grossness. Continue on for all that plus a peek at Tim, Eric, and Zach Galifianakis with horrible spray tans, as well as an official poster for the movie.
There's a delicate art to creating a good non sequitur, and if you're ever seen Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, then you're well aware of Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim's unparalleled ability to create strange, surreal non sequiturs that inspire hilarity, puzzlement, and for some people, indignant rage. The duo did their thing for five seasons on Adult Swim, but now they're blessing the world with a movie, which until today did not have a release date. Now, though, Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar has a theatrical release date, a VOD release date, and a teaser trailer. The teaser, though short, is what you'd expect, with hyperbole-laden quotations from Heidecker and Wareheim, then a sudden burst of surreal weirdness sure to alienate a substantial portion of the audience. That's how Tim and Eric do it, and I, for one, am grateful.
Actor John C. Reilly has appeared in over fifty films and seems to have the ability to move effortlessly between dramas, comedies and even musicals. Reilly first made a name for himself as a supporting actor working in gritty dramas like Casualties of War, and State of Grace but it was his work in the film Boogie Nights that made the actor a household name. After that, he went on to appear in a string of critically successful films such as Gangs Of New York, The Hours, and Chicago, for which he earned his Academy Award nomination. Since then, Reilly has turned his attention to the world of comedy and has appeared in some of the most popular comedic films of the last few years including Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, and most recently Cedar Rapids. But of all the comedies that Reilly has made, it would seem that Step Brothers co-starring Will Ferrell is the movie that has resonated with audiences the most.
Step Brothers was originally released in 2008 and while it only made back $65 million of its $128 million budget, the movie has found a huge following on DVD and blu-ray. The film starred Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, who first worked together on Talladega Nights, as childish adults suddenly forced to live together as brothers when their single parents decide to marry each other. The movie was directed by Ferrell’s constant collaborator Adam McKay (Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy) and produced by comedy guru Judd Apatow (Knocked Up). We first brought you news of a possible sequel last month when Will Ferrell mentioned at a press conference for his film Everything Must Go that McKay and he were kicking around ideas for a sequel with Reilly. One of the possible plots being considered for the sequel involves Ferrell and Reilly’s characters adopting a child of their own.
I recently had a chance to sit down and speak with John C. Reilly while he was out promoting his latest film Terri, which opens in theaters on July 1st. I began by taking the opportunity to ask the popular actor about the recent rumors involving Step Brothers 2. “Yes, that has been widely reported already and we’re talking about it,” confessed Reilly. I followed up by asking the actor exactly how discussion of a project like this begins. “It begins with every third person that comes up to me telling me that they love Step Brothers,” he admitted. “Then that gets back to the studio and the studio says, hey we want to make the sequel, are you guys interested? Then Will and me meet with Adam the director/writer and think, I don’t know, is there anything there? It seems like there might be but we’ll see. It’s in pretty early stages right now,” confirmed Reilly.
In addition to comedic films, Reilly has also unleashed his talent on television as he is an avid contributor to Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, the extremely popular Adult Swim series. In fact, Reilly is set to appear in the film version of the show called Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie and I ask him why he enjoys working with the bizarre comedy duo so much. “I just love how chaotic and crazy those guys are, how subversive their humor is and how absurd they are. When you work with Tim and Eric you never feel like there is someone watching over you who is going to stop you from saying something or from going too far,” Reilly explained. “It’s a completely free feeling when you are working with them and the movie is definitely absurd.” Finally, I asked the actor if the film is going to be like the TV series or if it will have more of a standard movie plot. “No there is more of a story than there usually is in the episodes,” Reilly confirmed. “The show is really just a bunch of different stuff strung together but this has a plot … if you want to call it that.”
Terri opens in theaters on July 1st.
