Though they may be our central preoccupations, it's not all superheroes and spaceships around these parts. There's a new clip from Bel Ami, for example, which finds Robert Pattinson and Christina Ricci as Georges Duroy and Clotilde de Marelle sharing some pillow talk in late 19th Century Paris. Don't worry, neither is speaking French; as usual, these Parisians simply use British accents.
According to the MPAA green band that precedes this new domestic poster for Bel Ami, the film is rated R, "For some strong sexuality, nudity, and brief language." So, this trailer makes it clear that Bel Ami has something for the largely-female demographic looking to see Robert Pattinson in a non-vampiric context, while the gents can enjoy the strong sexuality. And the lush, period-appropriate costuming.
After a reportedly wondrous test-screening earlier this year, Universal Pictures rescheduled Savages from September to smack dab in the middle of summer. Accordingly, marketing for the action-thriller directed by Oliver Stone should be getting underway in earnest shortly. A trailer is set to arrive this Thursday, April 5th. The first one-sheet for Savages has arrived online today, and it gives a feel for the story, but mostly highlights the ensemble cast with a nifty vertical design.
Most any avid user of one of America's favorite illicit substances knows that it is a good and charitable thing to be euphemistically smoked out, but the first image from Savages makes the term look altogether threatening. The film is co-written and directed by Oliver Stone, a filmmaker comfortable with violence, but even if you didn't know that, you'd know something unsavory is going on between Blake Lively and Benicio Del Toro, with the latter blowing smoke into the former's face in an entirely uncharitable manner.
One of the most discussed events at the 64th Cannes Film Festival – aside from Lady Gaga performing on the Croisette, Woody Allen debuting a film everyone agrees it pretty damn good, and provocateur Lars von Trier making a bad joke or two – was last Monday's premiere of The Tree Of Life. The film from venerated auteur Terrance Malick was intended to premiere at last year's fest, but Malick was busy fine-tuning his opus, which stars Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, and Sean Penn. At the closing ceremony on Sunday, Malick's latest was awarded the festival's highest honor, despite less-than ecstatic reviews.
Emile Hirsch is the latest actor to join the already-stacked cast of Savages, the adaptation of Don Winslow's novel from director Oliver Stone. Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, John Travolta, Salma Hayek, Uma Thurman, and Benicio del Toro are all starring in the film, as well, leading one to wonder if they've seen any of the films Stone has directed since 1995.
Quentin Tarantino is going to find out what his friends really think about him, when he sits in the hot-seat for the 2010 Friars Club Roast, to be held on Friday, October 1st, at The New York Hilton. His longtime friend Samuel L. Jackson will host. The roast will most likely be shown on Comedy Central sometime later in the month.
It must have been the disappointment of Clash of the Titans and the quickie 3D job. Or maybe it was simply the fact that Chris Columbus wrote and directed the film but Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief seemed like a good idea at the time. And in some ways, I was pleasantly surprised, yet there is something missing from the transition from book to screen.
