A few weeks ago I was asked if I would be interested in interviewing actor Richard Schiff, and I of course jumped at the chance. Who wouldn’t want to talk to one of the finest character actors working in the business today? In his impressive, almost thirty-year long career, he has appeared in such popular and critically acclaimed films as Malcolm X, Seven, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, I Am Sam, Ray, and Solitary Man. But the actor will always be best known to TV fans for his Emmy Award winning performance as Toby Ziegler on The West Wing, unarguably one of the greatest television shows ever created. So knowing that I was going to be speaking to the actor soon, I was pleasantly surprised when it was announced on Tuesday that Mr. Schiff would be playing the pivotal role of Dr. Hamilton in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman reboot Man of Steel.
Sacha Baron Cohen, the actor known for his merciless satirical work as Ali G, Borat, and Bruno, is reuniting with his Borat and Bruno director Larry Charles for The Dictator. From what we can tell, the film will be a more traditional narrative, abandoning the interview format that became increasingly difficult in Bruno due to Baron Ochen's global profile. The Dictator production has attracting attention in New York City, and now it will no doubt attract even more, as professional sexy person Megan Fox and the unstoppable John C. Reilly have joined the cast.
The storm surrounding Alfonso Cuaron’s upcoming film Gravity continues to swirl violently, leaving factual footholds a near impossibility. An assortment of female lead shifts have begun to garner serious attention. From Angelina Jolie (who was offered, and passed on the role twice) to Natalie Portman who now seems uninterested in the project, Cuaron is finding a bit of difficulty in acquiring his film’s most important asset: a convincingly strong willed female lead.
Things continue to get better for young prospect Emma Stone, who now looks to be a lock for the role of Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming reboot of Spider-Man, set to be directed by Marc Webb.
Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep may find themselves sharing time on the big screen. The two are reportedly interested in starring in the upcoming adaptation of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer winning play August: Osage County, which faces a planned summer shoot.
According to Variety, Steve Carell is looking to screenwriters Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley to script an upcoming adaptation of the music documentary Of All The Things. Goldstein and Daley have worked a number of projects together including What Babies Do, as well as the upcoming Horrible Bosses and Burt Wonderstone. Carell will star in, and produce the picture.
A film adaptation of the 1980’s television show The Equalizer, which originally starred the late Edward Woodward, is currently in the works with Russell Crowe rumored to take on the role of Robert McCall. Casino Royale scribe Paul Haggis is now rumored to be interested in tackling the contemporary adaptation.
David Oyelowo (The Last King of Scotland) has been tapped to appear in the upcoming DreamWorks drama The Help. The film is an adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s bestselling novel which tells the tale of three African American women in Mississippi circa 1960.
Oyelowo joins a stacked cast that includes Emma Stone (Easy A), Bryce Dallas Howard (Terminator Salvation), Viola Davis (Law Abiding Citizen) and Mike Vogel (Cloverfield). Tate Taylor penned the script and also acts as the picture’s director. The Help is scheduled to be released April 14th, 2011.
Revered mixed martial artist Cung Le is set to utilize his flashy Sanshou moves in the upcoming Dragon Eyes. The MMA themed action crime drama revolves around a man who looks to unite two rival gangs against corrupt officials. The film is a contemporary take on Akira Kurosawa’s 1961 original Yojimbo.
Pixar’s upcoming animated feature Brave is officially set to be directed by Brenda Chapman, who is also slated to pen the script. Chapman will act as the first woman to direct a Pixar feature.
