Faced with the age-old dilemma between going big or going home, James Cameron will invariably choose to go big, and he'll go so big as to move himself into a new tax bracket.  He most recently went big with Avatar, which became the biggest movie ever (not adjusted for inflation) usurping his previous achievement in bigness, Titanic.  With the fourteen-year record holder for highest grossing movie of all time getting a 3D re-release this April, you bet your ass Cameron's putting all that bigness on jumbo-sized IMAX screens.

In a month, awards season will be no more than a memory.  A memory of ecstatic accolades, tuxedo-sporting actors, and actresses clad in dresses so beautiful they'll melt your face off while inspiring impoverished people the world over to weep diamond tears.  Right now, though, we are very much in the middle of awards season.  The latest news comes from the Screen Actors Guild, which has just handed out its annual awards.

Carnage

Monday, 12 December 2011 12:42

Synopsis: Based on the stage play by Yasmina Reza, the story follows two New York couples who meet in an apartment to amicably discuss a schoolyard dispute between their two children.  As their meeting progresses, however, things spiral out of control as every character's secrets and long-repressed emotions result in endless drama.

Last week we saw the first trailer for the 3D rerelease of Titanic, the 1997 hit that became the biggest movie of all time, until director James Cameron decided to one-up himself with last year's Avatar, which usurped the story of youthful love aboard a doomed ocean liner.  That trailer was like a little time capsule taking us back to those heady days during which the world was infatuated with the film, thanks to Cameron's technical virtuosity, Leonardo DiCaprio's dreaminess, Kate Winslet's impeccable nudity, and Celine Dion belting out "My Heart Will Go On."

Today, though, we have a new featurette on the theatrical reissuing of Titanic, featuring the man himself, James Cameron, discussing the film's lasting emotional resonance and the thinking behind its conversion to 3D.  Cameron's reputation for perfectionism and ambition is well-earned, and when he promises that Titanic will provide a faultless post-conversion 3D experience that is equivalent to a feature filmed with 3D cameras, you take Big Jim at his word.

Up until Avatar last year, Titanic was by far the most successful movie of all time (not adjusted for inflation, naturally), and since James Cameron is all about three dimensions nowadays, we're getting a theatrical 3D rerelease of the film early next year.  In order to let the world know about said rerelease, a trailer and poster for Titanic 3D are now online and ready to view.

Time has heightened many of the film's flaws, and the backlash against Titanic was vicious enough that is easy to forget just how impossibly popular the film was after its 1997 debut.  This trailer, though, works overtime to push its audience's collective nostalgia-button, and if the sight of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as crazy kids falling in every shade of love doesn't get you, then James Horner's score might just do the trick.  And if that doesn't work, Celine Dion and the unabashed melodrama of "My Heart Will Go On" will be the nostalgia iceberg colliding with your vulnerable heart.

This winter, director Jason Reitman's second collaboration with Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody will hit theaters in the form of Young Adult, a darkly comedic drama starring Charlize Theron as an alcoholic author of young adult novels who embarks on a romantic quest that takes her to unexpected places.  With that film virtually guaranteed to yet another critical win for Reitman, Paramount Pictures has announced that it will co-produce and distribute his next film, which will star Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin as a mother and an escaped convict trying to hide out in her home over Labor Day weekend.

IAR Press Conference Coverage: 'Contagion'

Thursday, 08 September 2011 18:34

On the surface, Contagion might just seem like your average action thriller about a deadly pandemic, but in actuality it is a an exciting motion picture roller coaster ride with some serious award-winning pedigree. The film, which opens in theaters on September 9th, was not only directed by an Oscar winner, but it also stars four Oscar winners, four Oscar nominees, and a three time Emmy winner. No matter which way you slice it, that’s a whole lot of Hollywood gold for one movie.

The film was directed by Academy Award winner Steven Soderbergh (Traffic), based on a script by Scott Z. Burns (An Bourne Ultimatum), and stars Academy Award winners Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting), Kate Winslet (The Reader), Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose), and Gwyneth Paltrow (Shakespeare in Love), Academy Award nominees Laurence Fishburne (What’s Love Got To Do With It), Jude Law (Cold Mountain), John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone), and Elliot Gould (Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice), as well as three time Emmy winner Bryan Cranston (TV’s Breaking Bad). Contagion follows the rapid progress of a lethal airborne virus that kills within days. As the fast-moving pandemic gets worse, the medical community races to find the cure and control the panic that ensues around the world. As the disease spreads, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society that is coming apart. The movie plays like Outbreak done Traffic style.

Taking a brief break from posts about grown men in superhero costumes fighting pretend aliens, we humbly present for your enjoyment the inarguably great first trailer for Carnage.  The film is an adaptation of the stage play God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza, which finds two sets of parents meeting up at an apartment for a civilized discussion after one of their sons beats up the other in a schoolyard altercation.  What follows is a dramatic battle royale that comes about slowly, Who's Afraid of Virgina Woolf?-style, and the trailer promises an alternately cringe-inducing and hilarious movie.  There are only four actors in the whole film, and they're all Oscar caliber performers: Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Kate Winslet, and Christoph Waltz.  Based on this impeccable preview, all four look to be going for broke.

Remember that series of six character posters from Contagion, the upcoming thriller from Steven Soderbergh and his The Informant! screenwriter Scott Z. Burns?  You know, the ones featuring the famous faces of Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow and the thoroughly unnerving warning "DON'T TALK TO ANYONE. DON'T TOUCH ANYONE."  All six were pretty memorable, but just in case you've forgotten and for the sake of efficiency, Warner Bros has gone ahead and combined all six into one convenient package.  The new Contagion poster includes all six of those actors, plus a new tagline that may not be urgent as the last one, but is certainly no more comforting.

Yesterday, Warner Bros debuted six character posters from the pandemic thriller Contagion, and in keeping with the film's virulent subject matter, each one paired the visage of a famous castmember with the urgent warning, "Don't talk to anyone.  Don't touch anyone."  Today, the first official images from the film dropped online, and two out of the three show the consequences of both talking to and touching people during a viral outbreak.  One shows Matt Damon outside a quarantine zone, while another has a wisely containment-suited Jude Law in desolate, plague-ravaged San Francisco.  Rather oddly, a third image features Gwyneth Paltrow having a really fantastic time.
