MGM and Screen Gems seem determined to ensure that the Carrie remake doesn't end up a generic rehash that goes the way of 1999's misbegotten The Rage: Carrie 2.  In order to avoid that sequel's fate, the remake of Brian De Palma's 1976 horror classic has been attaching interesting talent, including director and star.  With a young actress set to play the eponymous telekinetic high school student, it looks as though a four-time Oscar nominee may very well play Carrie's deranged mother.

After taking cracks at three decidedly more British (okay, one Welsh) actors, the new Oldboy remake may have found an actor to play its villain on an entirely different continent.  The new take on the South Korean revenge classic is being directed by Spike Lee, and with its leading man and lady signed up and ready to go, the task has been finding the right guy to play the heavy.  It seems Sharlto Copley is the latest actor to be offered the role of the mysterious man messing with Josh Brolin.

It's been more than twenty years since Johnny 5 became a Christolic figure at the conclusion of Short Circuit 2, and since the 1986 original is still looked back upon with a fair amount of nostalgia, a remake is in order, yeah?  Dimension Film has it covered, and last year, the studio recruited family-friendly director Tim Hill to helm the new Short Circuit.  While his filmography includes subtext-free fare like Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Hop, Hill says the remade Johnny 5 will reflect the realities of modern drone warfare.

Twenty-five years ago, the libidinous dance moves of Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray made the original Dirty Dancing one of the most successful independent movies of all time, grossing just under $214 million worldwide against a budget of $6 million.  Since the movie made Swayze a sex symbol and made an indelible impression on popular culture, a remake was damn near inevitable.  With a director and a release date already set for the new Dirty Dancing, the remake now has its second writer.

Earlier this week, Sony Pictures let the cat out of the bag with the reveal of the first trailer for Total Recall, the remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1990 adaption, which loosely took on Philip K. Dick short story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale.  Now that the cat's out of the bag, it's busily doing adorable cat-stuff.  By which I mean to say that there's now an official behind the scenes video for Total Recall online.

Last week, Sony Pictures released one of those teasers-for-a-teaser giving a glimpse at the theatrical trailer for its remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1990 crazyfest Total Recall.  Just as was promised at the time, the full trailer debuted today during the NBA that saw the Boston Celtics throw down on the Miami Heat, so of course the trailer is now available online.

Disappearing Farrell: 'Total Recall' Poster

Wednesday, 28 March 2012 13:07

Yesterday saw the release of a teaser for the teaser trailer for Total Recall.  Luckily, the increasingly popular trailer-for-a-trailer trend has yet to extend to posters, as Sony Pictures has gone ahead and followed up that tease with a full-on poster.

The poster gets audiences in on three crucial points.  The futuristic cityscape lets you know this is science fiction, fact that Colin Farrell is dissolving into cubes lets you know his identity is subject to technological confusion, and the gun in Farrell's hand let you know that the film will contain plenty of action.

Since MGM found a director for the Carrie remake earlier this year, the natural question regarding the film-to-be is simply who will play the title character?  After all, Sissy Spacek was nominated for an Oscar for her performance as a telekinetic teenager in Brian De Palma's 1976 adaptation of Stephen King's first novel.  The question of just who will be covered in pig's blood at prom is close to being answered, it seems, as the candidates to play Carrie are down to two actresses: Chloe Grace Moretz and Haley Bennett.

Some topical news on the eve of St. Patrick's Day today, folks.  Tomorrow, after getting thoroughly housed on cheap, watery, disgustingly green-dyed beer, we can all pass out peacefully in puddles of our own vomit knowing that Leprechaun will be remade.  That's right, the film that kicked off the campy, improbable straight-to-video franchise, is going to be recreated with "a modern-day spin."
