Rogue of the Week: Jeff Bridges

Last week, Tron: Legacy opened at number one. True Grit is opening on Wednesday. Both films offer audiences a chance to see very different sides of Jeff Bridges.

Bridges is one of those rare actors that achieved fame early on. Being the son of a successful actor, Lloyd Bridges and younger brother to Beau Bridges, it certainly didn’t hurt getting him started. However, you don’t have a career that spans from 1958 and continues successfully today if you don’t have the talent to back it up.

After returning to the world of Tron 28 years after the original, it was exciting to see what happened to Kevin Flynn [Bridges' character] for fans of the original. While critics had mixed reactions to the film, based on Tron topping the box office opening weekend, the film pleased audiences looking forward to a return to “the Grid”. Either way it was a risk, and Bridges has had a career full of risky films. From a has been country singer in Crazy Heart to a fellow named “The Dude” in The Big Lebowski. He is always taking on interesting roles. In fact, he seems to seek out the more unique projects the older he gets. He is the real deal!

In True Grit you can see him in a wonderful performance as U.S. Marshall "Rooster" Cogburn. It is one hell of a western which also carries The Coen Brothers golden touch. It is a marvelously gruff and tough take on the role, originally made famous by John Wayne.

When many actors coast on their previous success, he continues to make unique choices that challenge him as an actor. This is why Jeff Bridges is our Rogue of the Week.
