Rogue of the Week: Nicolas Cage

The first time Nicolas Cage caught my attention was in the classic 80s flick Valley Girl, and he was totally awesome. This funny, sweet look at a strange romance between a punk rocker (Cage) and a valley girl (Deborah Foreman) is a cult classic for good reason. The script is great, and the chemistry between Cage and his leading lady, Foreman (April Fool’s Day, Waxwork), is impressive. Valley Girl really encouraged people to take notice of what this guy could do.

His early career, while truly exciting to watch, was only a preface to the material that really made him a star. When Cage took things to the next level, it didn’t take long for him to become a modern fixture in Hollywood. He delivered fine performances in films like Birdy, Moonstruck, Racing with the Moon, and Red Rock West.

Then suddenly Cage became an action hero. With The Rock, Face/Off, and Con Air, he proved more than adequate for fighting bad guys and saving the day. And just when you thought he’d stick to the action, he turned around and surprised audiences again. Drama Leaving Las Vegas brought him critical attention and an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1995. He gives a shockingly good performance as an alcoholic making his way to Las Vegas in order to drink himself to death. Again, his connection with the lead actress, lovely and talented former Rogue of the Week Elisabeth Shue, contributed to the film’s massive success.

My favorite Cage role is his fantastic turn as Sailor, opposite Laura Dern, in David Lynch’s untamed masterpiece Wild at Heart. He and Dern light the screen on fire in a pairing that is “hotter than Georgia asphalt.”

With three decades of work behind him, Cage still takes more chances than most actors. A true Rogue, this talented actor picks roles that sometimes pay off and sometimes don’t. Nevertheless, he continues to challenge himself and have fun along the way. His latest film Season of the Witch fits well amongst the other films in his enduring career. The action-thriller is a crazy, fun, popcorn flick that is sure to please all Nicolas Cage fans out there.

So congratulations, Mr. Cage, you are our Rogue of the Week.
