Rogue of the Week: Davis Guggenheim

Earlier today, we reported that Davis Guggenheim’s excellent documentary, Waiting for “Superman”. was nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Documentary Filmmaking by the DGA.

As a filmmaker, Guggenheim has examined the failing of America’s educational system. The idea that so many children are being passed on from grade to grade and not really learning is absolutely heartbreaking. While I won’t delve too deep into the film itself for this particular story, it is very clear that something is terribly wrong within our public school system. This was a subject that needed to be opened up, and this absorbing documentary did just that.

Guggenheim’s previous work was also met with critical acclaim. An Inconvenient Truth was a well-received exploration of global warming and the effects it has on each and every one of us. The documentary ultimately earned two Academy Awards, one for Best Original Song (I Need to Wake Up by Melissa Etheridge) and the other was for Best Documentary Feature.

There are many that will disagree with the acclaimed director’s views, yet he continues to take on important and controversial subjects. Whether you agree with his films or not, he certainly has created some serious thought and conversation.

Congratulations to you Davis Guggenheim! Not only on your DGA nomination, but you’re officially this week’s Rogue of the Week.

What are your thoughts on Davis Guggenheim’s films? Keep it civil please?
