Rogue of the Week: Ricky Gervais

The Golden Globe Awards have come and gone, and the person everybody is talking about is Ricky Gervais. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard about his hosting gig rubbing quite a few people the wrong way.

During Gervais's time on stage, he went after a slew of celebrities including Robert Downey Jr., Charlie Sheen, Tim Allen, Sylvester Stallone, and Cher. His humor did not sit well with many of those in attendance that night, especially when the joke was on them. Downey Jr., Allen, and Tom Hanks each made their own quips in response. All in all, it was a pretty tense night, yet it was the most fun I’ve had watching the Golden Globes in years.

When you bring a certain type of comedian to host an event, he might, in turn, bring his own humor. Sometimes the comedian may self-censor the act for political reasons, yet I’d rather he remain true to what he is good at. Gervais decided to stick with what he was good at: he ran things the way he wanted and ruffled a ton of feathers.

Sure, there is something to be said about being nice, but when it comes to humor, safe can get a little dull. Check out nearly every award show hosted by a comedian and you’ll see plenty of watered down jokes. Comedy, however, has the potential to be bold, exciting, irreverent and shocking. The more surprising it is, the better. Gervais took it as far as he could at the Golden Globes, and I say, Good for him!

You can argue that his humor wasn’t appropriate for the award show. However, I’d prefer to have a bit of a jolt allowing for the occasional bruised ego than watch a by-the-numbers award show. The winners still won, the praise was still given, and for once, the ceremony has people really conversing.

I thank you, Ricky Gervais, for being you. You stuck to your guns and you didn’t cheapen yourself to play polite. After all, everybody you went after will be just fine - bruised ego aside.

Yes, Ricky Gervais is our Rogue of the Week!

Should Ricky Gervais be Rogue of the Week, or would you prefer something more akin to “Villain of the Week?” Check out the highlights of the event by clicking here.
