Rogue of the Week: Kevin Smith

Maybe it is the loyal fan in me. Or perhaps, it is sort of a relief to hear a filmmaker speak his mind whether you like what he has to say or not. Either way, I like Kevin Smith as a person, a writer/director and yes, even as a twitter enthusiast.

Years ago, Mr. Smith was in a little movie called Catch and Release (2006). I had a one on one interview with him to talk about the film and his role, but somehow the conversation geared toward horror. He told me about an idea he had called Red State. Back then, there was no script, no anything, just an idea. It also happened to be an idea that sounded very intriguing.

Red State is now a reality, and it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Yet Kevin has no intention of following along a traditional path. He is planning a unique form of distribution for this thriller, which includes taking the film on the road and screening it in select cities to the fans.

He has been very vocal about his dealings with the on-line press (as many of them have in return), and he also seems to be getting ready to say goodbye to directing. After his next hockey flick, Hit Somebody, he plans to give other young filmmakers the chance to get behind the camera with SModcast Pictures. Funny thing is, all those years ago when my article went up about him making a horror/thriller called Red State; people didn’t seem to buy that it would happen. Clearly it did. I firmly believe that SModcast Pictures will become a beacon of hope for a new generation.

The truth is, as much of a fan of Smith’s that I am, I will not blindly glorify a film I didn’t like. Yet without movies like Chasing Amy, Clerks and Clerks 2, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and even Zack and Miri Make a Porno, my movie going experience wouldn’t have been complete. Chasing Amy in particular really struck a chord and in many ways it seems to be his most personal work to date. Even if he made the worst film of all time, it doesn’t change the fact that the man has made me laugh, cry and have a fantastic time at the movies.

All internet nastiness aside, Kevin Smith is a talented man. Within this war of words that has been brewing from all sides, including internet forums, chat rooms and twitter accounts, the fact that he is trying to shake things up a bit earns him this week’s Rogue of the Week!
