Haywire also reunites Soderbergh with screenwriter Lem Dobbs for the first time since their work together on the seminal revenge film The Limey. 

IAR's Managing Editor Jami Philbrick recently had a chance to speak with the film's technical advisor Aaron Cohen about his work on Haywire, as well look at some of the weapons that were used in the film. Cohen discussed the new movie, his unique background, training Gina Carano for the film, and how director Steven Soderbergh set out to make the action in the movie unlike anything that you've ever seen before. 

In Haywire, the new action film from director Steven Soderbergh, Mixed Martial Arts star Gina Carano plays Mallory Kane, a special ops-trained mercenary who finds herself betrayed by her superiors and those she trusted most.  The unstoppable Kane must then get to the bottom of the mystery negotiating between a cast of enemies and allies played by Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Michael Fassbender, and Michael Angarano.

Inspired by Soderbergh's unique command of stylish action and Carano's badass heroine, Go Haywire is a new interactive thriller, a series of shorts that transpose the bone-crunching action to the realm of YouTube.  After her facebook friends abandon her online, YouTube star Olga Kay vows to take her two-fisted revenge.  With the help of Aaron Cohen, the Special Forces adviser on Haywire, Kay trains herself to be a whirlwind of supercool action, taking on her nemeses Joe Nation, Toby Turner, and Michael Gallagher of Totally Sketch.  Since Go Haywire is an interactive thriller, you get to choose the order in which Kay decimates her opponents.

It was important to Soderbergh to revisit that genre of cinema, and possibly update its conventions. I recently had the pleasure of attending the Haywire Press Conference held at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills, which was filled with members of the press eager to hear Antonio Banderas, Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum and Gina Carano talk about the action-packed new film.

A new trailer for Haywire, the first all-out action movie from director Steven Soderbergh, has arrived online today, and to say that it's a doozy would be a rather dramatic understatement.  As it opens, the trailer pulls a clever trick, visually introducing the film's leading lady, MMA star Gina Carano, in fancy evening wear with Michael Fassbender, giving the distinct impression of a restrained relationship drama.  Then, out of nowhere, the two start viciously beating the hell out of each other, and the trailer hops into high-action mode without ever looking back.  Like the first trailer released over the summer, this one ably sells Carano as a true action star, and her character, Mallory Kane, looks to be an unstoppable whirlwind, a one-woman wrecking machine jarring loose our notions of what an asskicker looks like.

Last month, the Steven Soderbergh-directed thriller Contagion made a surprisingly big pop-cultural impact for an uncompromising film about an event as unpleasant as a viral pandemic, but for his next feature, the auteur behind Traffic, The Limey, Ocean's Eleven, Erin Brokovich, The Informant!, Out of Sight, and Sex, Lies, and Videotape is having some fun with his first ever straight-up action movie, Haywire.  Relativity Media has released a new official one sheet for the film, and it makes it abundantly clear that leading lady Gina Carano is not to be trifled with.  The poster makes this point with a stylishly stripped-down approach.

Not many directors, even those who make their way as "action directors", can shoot and edit an action sequence that is effectively compelling and coherent.  Steven Soderbergh is not particularly known as a director of action, having helmed Traffic, Erin Brockovich, The Limey, Ocean's Eleven, The Informant!, and Out of Sight.  With Haywire, though the auteur has crafted an espionage thriller showcasing the formidable skills of MMA fighter Gina Carano, making her feature film debut.

Soderbergh was in attendance at Relativity Media's Hall H panel during the San Diego Comic-Con today, along with the radiant Carano and the excessively charming Channing Tatum.  The three described their experiences with Haywire, participated in a Q & A, debuted the film's first trailer, and introduced a clip that, to put it bluntly, kicked all manner of ass.
