It's been awhile since we heard much from Man of Steel, the new Superman movie currently being directed by Zack Snyder. In fact, the last thing we posted on the reboot was a picture of Henry Cavill kindly posing for a picture with a young lad whilst wearing his full Superman gear. Two months later, there are some new, albeit bite-sized, info-nuggets on the film from the guy who designed that costume, Michael Wilkinson.
WonderCon 2012 (San Diego Comic-Con’s sister convention) kicked off on Friday at the Anaheim Convention Center and that evening fan’s were treated to the World Premiere of the latest film from DC Universe Animated Original Movies entitled Superman vs. The Elite, which will be available on Blu-ray DVD combo, VOD and digital downloads beginning June 12th.
The PG-13 direct-to-video film series has adapted many classic DC stories in the past including Superman: Doomsday, Justice League: The New Frontier, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, Batman: Under the Red Hood, All-Star Superman, and Batman: Year one. The new film is based on the classic Action Comics issue #775, “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?” written by popular comic book scribe Joe Kelly with art by Doug Mahnke. The story takes a look at the values Superman stands for and if they are still necessary in our cynical new world.
International Movie Star and vocal proponent of Mega-Acting Nicolas Cage is unabashed comic book fan, has long maintained that the stories of spandex-clad superheroes are a potent modern equivalent of ancient mythological figures like Hercules and Zeus. As such, it's no surprise that he has a formidable comic collection. One specific item in that collection will be the subject of Action No. 1, a comedy that presents a fictionalized version of the real-life of theft of Cage's rare copy of the titular issue.
A few weeks ago I was asked if I would be interested in interviewing actor Richard Schiff, and I of course jumped at the chance. Who wouldn’t want to talk to one of the finest character actors working in the business today? In his impressive, almost thirty-year long career, he has appeared in such popular and critically acclaimed films as Malcolm X, Seven, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, I Am Sam, Ray, and Solitary Man. But the actor will always be best known to TV fans for his Emmy Award winning performance as Toby Ziegler on The West Wing, unarguably one of the greatest television shows ever created. So knowing that I was going to be speaking to the actor soon, I was pleasantly surprised when it was announced on Tuesday that Mr. Schiff would be playing the pivotal role of Dr. Hamilton in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman reboot Man of Steel.
In 1978's Superman, as directed by Richard Donner, Marlon Brando played Superman's Kryptonian father Jor-El, a wise, beneficent, silver-coiffed scientist attempting to warn his doomed homeworld of impending planetary disaster. Some digital work even allowed Brando to briefly reprise the role posthumously in Superman Returns, but in the currently-filming Superman reboot Man of Steel, Jor-El is played by none other than Russell Crowe. Earlier this month, a batch of unofficial pictures from the Vancouver set gave our first look at Crowe in costume, which is traditionally regal, but more martial than past Jor-Els. Now, Crowe himself has indicated that his version of Superdad is more physical, getting into a proper fight with a combatant the identity of whom is a minor spoiler.
Since Batman: The Animated Series first premiered in the early 1990's, Kevin Conroy has voiced the Caped Crusader on multiple television series, as well as in a theatrical feature, and multiple videogames. He's sitting out Warner Premiere's new animated feature, Batman: Year One, as it features a younger Batman, but Conroy's back in Justice League: Doom, the next DC Universe-based animated movie. At New York Comic-Con this weekend, Warner Premiere debuted the first trailer for the superhero ensemble, which is loosely based on Mark Waid's comic arc Justice League: Tower of Babel. The story finds each member of the League made vulnerable when an enemy utilizes Batman's secret contingency plans against his cohorts. As you can see in the trailer, the enemy in Doom is, appropriately enough, the Legion of Doom.
Over the last week, there's been shortage of talk about the reinvented Superman costume sported by Henry Cavill in Man of Steel, the franchise reboot currently filming under the direction of 300 and Watchmen helmer Zack Snyder. Unofficial images from the Illinois set recently provided the most extensive look at the exceedingly tight outfit, with its addition of stylized lines and elimination of Superman's traditional red underoos. But what of General Zod, the Kryptonian villain played by Michael Shannon? Early set photos from a few weeks back showed a guy with a very Shannon-looking jawline wearing a motion-capture suit, naturally leading to speculation that Zod's costume would be computer generated. Now, Shannon himself has confirmed that his character's Kryptonian regalia will indeed be CGI.
Several news outlets are now reporting that director Zack Snyder has cast veteran actor and former-Morpheus Laurence Fishburne (Apocalypse Now, Boyz n the Hood, The Matrix) as the Daily Planet's Editor-in-Chief Perry White in his Superman reboot, Man of Steel.
Superman is undoubtedly a force for good in his fictitious universe, flying about to gets cats out of trees, stopping burglaries, and turning back time to resurrect his dead girlfriend. With his superpowered fisticuffs, however, collateral damage must be considered; Supes goes out of his way to keep humans from harm, but has no issue with doing epic property damage. Some new information from the edges of Zack Snyder's soon-to-shoot Superman reboot Man of Steel indicates that denizens of Metropolis and maybe even Smallville probably pay far more in auto insurance premiums. An appeal to shut down a highway in Illinois and two pictures from the set both suggest that the Big Blue Boyscout might cause more damage than a drunk toddler behind the wheel of a humvee.
