WonderCon 2012

Here’s the thing about Prometheus, the 3D sci-fi movie coming out in June of this year. Prometheus was made by a genius. Its story is connected to, by degrees, one of the most important science-fiction narratives in movie history. In short, hardcore followers of Ridley Scott and the tetralogy inspired by his brainchild, Alien, have been waiting for this moment since it was first announced several years ago.

That anticipation was palpable at the WonderCon 2012 Fox Film Panel. The crowd cheered at length before one of the Prometheus script’s writers and panel moderator, Damon Lindelhof, came out to introduce the trailer. (It was to have been the first time an audience saw the Prometheus trailer, but unfortunately, someone leaked the trailer online 12 hours ago).

The crowd was understandably excited. Sir Ridley Scott is directly responsible for stunning movies of visual and narrative splendor across genres. From Alien (1979) to Bladerunner (1982) to Thelma and Louise (1991), Black Hawk Down (2001) and Gladiator (2000), his mythology is specific, humanistic, and resounding.

The full theatrical trailer for Prometheus is now online.  Phrased another way: The new Prometheus trailer can now forcibly insert visual marvelousness into your eyeholes.  We've long known that Ridley Scott's return to science-fiction and the universe of his 1979 masterpiece Alien would be a stylistic treat, since it's Scott and all, but this trailer gives us a better idea of the film's actual story.

WonderCon 2012 (San Diego Comic-Con’s sister convention) kicked off on Friday at the Anaheim Convention Center and that evening fan’s were treated to the World Premiere of the latest film from DC Universe Animated Original Movies entitled Superman vs. The Elite, which will be available on Blu-ray DVD combo, VOD and digital downloads beginning June 12th.

The PG-13 direct-to-video film series has adapted many classic DC stories in the past including Superman: Doomsday, Justice League: The New Frontier, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, Batman: Under the Red Hood, All-Star Superman, and Batman: Year one. The new film is based on the classic Action Comics issue #775, “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?” written by popular comic book scribe Joe Kelly with art by Doug Mahnke. The story takes a look at the values Superman stands for and if they are still necessary in our cynical new world.

By now, everyone is familiar with annual nerd-hajj to pop-culture Mecca at Comic-Con in San Diego every July.  While Comic-Con is doubtless the world's largest gathering of genre enthusiasts in the world, Comic-Con International isn't limited to that one event.  Normally, mid-March sees a higher-than-average concentration of nerdlingers and celebrants of every stripe in San Francisco for WonderCon, perhaps the second biggest comic book convention of the year.  This year, though, due to renovations at the con's home, he Moscone center, WonderCon is relocating to the sunny climes of Southern California in Anaheim.
