Opening in New York and Los Angeles theaters on October 10th is the new music drama Whiplash, which is receiving early Oscar buzz. The film was written and directed by Damien Chazelle (Grand Piano), and stars Miles Teller (21 & Over, That Awkward Moment), J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man, Juno), and Paul Reiser (Beverly Hills Cop, Aliens).

Whiplash has been nominated for 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for J.K. Simmons, and Best Writing - Adapted Screenplay for Damien Chazelle

Last fall, IAR's Managing Editor Jami Philbrick had the pleasure of sitting down with writer and director Damien Chazelle to talk about his work on Whiplash. The Oscar-nominated screenwriter discussed his critically acclaimed film, its success, how he created the screenplay, his personal inspiration, casting Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons, their on-screen chemistry, and the tragic friendship between Fletcher and Andrew.

*As an added bonus, Philbrick recently spoke exclusively to producer Jason Blum (Blumhouse Productions) about the overwhelming success of Whiplash and its five Academy Award nominations.

You can read what producer Jason Blum had to say about Whiplash below.

IAR: Congratulations on the success of Whiplash and your Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

Jason Blum: Thanks you. It's really great to be nominated. We got five nominations and I'm excited for the ceremony. It's been really fun.

When you first read Damien Chazelle's screenplay, did you instantly recognize that it was Academy Award quality material?

Blum: No. I had no idea. We produced it from scratch. Couper Samuelson runs production for us and he identified the script. He is the one who pushed it forward in the company. We did a short first, then we produced the movie, finished it, and screened it at Sundance. I always thought the movie was great but I never thought it would get this far. So I'm very happily surprised.

A promising young drummer (Teller) enrolls at a cutthroat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor (Simmons) who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential.
