Thanks to actor Samuel L. Jackson and his recent role in the Marvel Studios films, the classic character of Col. Nick Fury is now a household name. Jackson appeared as Fury briefly in Iron Man, and returned to the role last summer for Iron Man 2. He is set to appear in Thor, which opens in theaters on May 6th, as well as Captain America: First Avenger, which opens in theaters on July 22nd. But the character's biggest role will be in Joss Wedon's The Avengers, which is set for release next summer and will bridge the gap between all the Marvel Studio movies. In the Marvel universe, Fury is the secret government agent that works side by side with the costumed community. But in the overall comic book world Fury has a counterpart ... and her name is Amanda Waller.

In DC comics mythology, Amanda Waller is the secret government liaison that works with the capes, but unlike Fury ... she isn't always working with the good guys. In the comics, Waller was originally in charge of the Suicide Squad, a semi-secret government-run group of former super villains working in return for amnesty, and would later go on to serve as Secretary of Metahuman Affairs under President Lex Luthor. The character has appeared on TV before, first voiced by actress C.C.H. Pounder (The Shield) on Justice League Unlimited, and later in a live-action role on Smallville, portrayed by actress Pam Grier (Jackie Brown). The role will soon be taken over by Oscar nominated actress Angela Bassett (What's Love Got to Do with It) in the upcoming big screen adaptation of Green Lantern, which opens in theaters on June 17th and stars Ryan Reynolds as the Emerald Knight.

Amanda Waller was not included in the original draft of the Green Lantern script, but was later added by the suggestion of DC comics' Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, who has also penned the Green Lantern comic book series for the better part of the last decade. This inclusion, along with the casting of the Oscar nominated actress, has made many DC comics fans wonder if Waller will also be included in upcoming DC films like The Dark Knight Rises, Superman: Man of Steel, and the proposed Justice League film, similar to the way Fury has been used in the Marvel movies. It should also be noted that Waller is supposedly included in The Dark Knight writer David S. Goyer's yet unmade Green Arrow film, Green Arrow: Escape From Super Max.

Our very own Jasmine Simpkins recently had a chance to sit down and talk with actress Angela Bassett, as well as her co-star Loretta Devine, to discuss their new film Jumping the Broom, which opens in theaters on May 6th. Jasmine took the opportunity to ask the Oscar nominated actress about Green Lantern and her role as Amanda Waller. The actress talked about the part, working with Geoff Johns, her hope that Waller will be included in more DC movies and the fact that she will have a larger role in the sequel to Green Lantern, which is currently being written.
