Opening in theaters on October 12th is the new comedy-drama Smashed from director James Ponsoldt (Off the Black), which he co-wrote with actress/comedian Susan Burke (G4's Attack of the Show!). The film features an excellent cast of actors and comedians including Mary Elizabeth Winstead (The Thing), Aaron Paul (AMC's Breaking Bad), Nick Offerman (21 Jump Street), Megan Mullally (Fame), Kyle Gallner (Beautiful Boy), Mary Kay Place (Being John Malkovich), and Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer (The Help).
IAR's Managing Editor Jami Philbrick recently had an opportunity to sit down with director James Ponsoldt, as well as actress Mary Kay Place to talk about their work on Smashed. The director discussed creating the screenplay with co-writer Susan Burke, trying to show the fun side of alcoholism as well as the dangers, while Place talked about her character's relationship with her daughter and with drinking, how she feels when her daughter gives up alcohol, and Place's own cocktail of choice.
