Currently playing in theaters in New York, and opening exclusively at the Nuart Theater in West Los Angeles on November 23rd is the new environmental documentary Chasing Ice. The movie was directed by filmmaker Jeff Orlowski, and features National Geographic photographer James Balog as he travels across the Arctic deploying time-lapse cameras designed to capture evedence of the world's changing glaciers.

IAR's Managing Editor Jami Philbrick recently had a chance to sit down with director Jeff Orlowski and National Geographic photographer James Balog to talk about their work on Chasing Ice. The two men discussed the new documentary, Orlowski's process of making the film, how Balog felt about his work being featured in the project, the importance of what he is doing, discovering hard evidence that the glaciers are melting, addressing the skeptics, if it is too late to do something about it, and the financial cost of climate change.

Chasing Ice follows award-winning environmental photographer James Balog on his journey to capture rapidly-enroding glaciers in the Arctic. Balog was once a skeptic about climate change and a cynic about the nature of academic research. But through his Extreme Ice Survey, he discovers undeniable evidence of our changing planet. In the film, Balog deploys revolutionary time-lapse cameras to capture a multi-year record of the world's changing glaciers. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. Traveling with a team of young adventurers across the brutal Arctic, Balog risks his career and his well-being in pursuit of the biggest story facing humanity. As the debate polarizes America, and the intensity of natural disasters ramps up globally, Chasing Ice depicts a heroic photojournalist on a mission to deliver fragile hope to our carbon-powered planet.

Chasing Ice is currently playing in theaters in New York, and opens exclusively at the Nuart Theater in West Los Angeles on November 23rd.
