It's been well over a hundred years since J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan character first appeared onstage.  In the century since the novel now known as Peter Pan was first published, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up has seen a number of adaptations to film and television, most notably, Disney's 1953 animated Peter Pan.  As is the current style, Sony Pictures is developing an origin story titled Neverland, and it would appear that the studio has found a director in Gavin O'Connor.

Everyone is stocking up on champagneand ticker tape for 2012.  Earth has completed yet another orbit of the sun, and as wecontinue to cruise through an oblivious and indifferent solar system at about 67,000 miles perhour, it's time to look back on the year that was.  Like every other year, the conclusion of2011 means a veritable avalanche of year-end lists, from chronicles of favorites to bests toworsts to pretty much everything in between.  Here at IAR, we've looked back with Jami Philbrick's picks for the Top Ten Movies of the Year, and we've looked forward with Brett Gursky's Oscar Predictions for the 84th Annual AcademyAwards.

Now, like anydevastatingly handsome individual, IAR is going to look in the mirror and say, "Damn, I looked good this year."  Okay, not quite.  But what we are going to do is showcase some of the content produced this year that showed what the organization is all about and what it does best.  This end-of-the-year compilation is broken down into ten categories: News, Press Conference Coverage, Screenings, Documentary Coverage, On Camera Interviews, Convention Coverage, Oscar Contender Interviews, Comic Book Movie Coverage, Legends, and finally, Scoops and Exclusives.  You'll find all those categories right here, complete with links to all manner of articles.

IAR's Top Ten Films of 2011

Tuesday, 27 December 2011 21:05

Another year has come and gone, and what a year 2011 was for movies! We’ve had sensational sequels (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), impressive comic book adapted projects (X-Men: First Class), fascinating documentaries (Page One: Inside the New York Times), amazing animation (The Adventures of Tintin), groundbreaking 3D (Hugo), high-octane action (Drive), homerun hitting sports films (Moneyball), terrific dramas (The Descendants), hilarious comedies (Bridesmaids), blockbuster alien robots (Transformers: Dark of the Moon), movies that celebrate the art of cinema itself (The Artist), and the return of some true Hollywood legends (The Muppets).

The following is a look back at some of my favorite films of 2011. While my job as Managing Editor of IAR allows me to see almost every movie that is released, I was not able to see all of them (sorry Young Adult, and J. Edgar). The list I’ve compiled is based on the films that I did see this year and which of those are my favorites overall. I’m not necessarily saying that these are the ten best films released this year, but they are the ten I enjoyed the most.

in 2006, 300, adapted from the comic book by Frank Miller, was a big enough hit that it turned Zack Snyder into a household name and allowed many a heterosexual male to unapologetically love a movie featuring no end of sweaty men in leather diapers.  Of course, Warner Bros was interested in franchising the surprise hit, but with almost every major character meeting their end, it was going to have to be a sequel without the familiar ripped, lathered-up dudes.  So now we have a sequel, 300: Battle of Artemesia, and Australian beefcake Joel Edgerton is in talks with Warner Bros to play the presumably shirtless lead character.

Next year, we'll see theatrical 3D re-releases of Titanic, Top Gun, and Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, which will kick off yearly three-dimensional reissues of all six films in the evergreen Star Wars franchise.  The numbers from this summer suggest that audiences may very well be experiencing 3D fatigue after a few years of rushed post-conversions and often-shoddy or unnecessary 3D.  This weekend's box office suggests that this wariness of the format doesn't extend to already-beloved re-releases, as Disney's The Lion King rather unexpectedly made its 3D debut in first place.

Year after year, the first weekend following Labor Day is consistently far from what someone somewhere almost certainly calls "boffo box office."  That is to say, it's not generally a busy weekend at the movies.  This year, Sunday was the tenth anniversary of a truly horrific national trauma, as well as, less importantly, the first Sunday of the NFL season.  To provide escapism at their local multiplexes, Americans by and large chose to go see a methodical and disturbingly plausible movie about an unstoppable viral pandemic.  With its all-star cast and effective marketing, Contagion debuted in the number one spot, grossing more than expected, while Warrior opened in third and two other new releases failed rather spectacularly.

Opening in theaters on September 9th is the new film from Miracle director Gavin O'Connor called Warrior, which takes place in the world of mix martial arts. The film stars Tom Hardy (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises), Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom, The Thing), Jennifer Morrison (House, Star Trek), Frank Grillo (Prison Break, Edge of Darkness), Noah Emmerich (Frequency, Super 8), Kevin Dunn (Transformers, Unstoppable), and Nick Nolte (48 Hours, Cape Fear).

IAR's managing editor Jami Philbrick recently had an opportunity to sit down with Warrior director Gavin O'Connor, as well as several members of the cast including Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Morrison, and Frank Grillo. They had a chance to discuss the new film; its themes of brotherhood and family, the complex characters, MMA fighting, Jennifer Morrison's audition, and Gavin O'Connor's dedication to detail.

In the upcoming sports drama Warrior, British upstart Tom Hardy and Australian up-and-comer Joel Edgerton play estranged brothers, both involved in Mixed Martial Arts for very different reasons but both headed for an inevitable showdown in a no-holds barred throwdown.  The theatrical one-sheet for Warrior features the two leads shirtless and showing off abs that, if combined, would form a twelve-pack.  Today, and only for a few more hours, you have the opportunity to bid on the poster signed by both Hardy and Edgerton.  If you win the autographed poster, you not only get a thoroughly manly one-sheet, but you'll also be supporting a wholly worthwhile charity. So act fast!

British actor Tom Hardy has come an awful long way and gained an awful lot of muscle mass since playing the skinny Shinzon, the equally bald and thoroughly villainous clone of Captain Picard in 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis.  Since earning no end of praise as the title character Nicolas Winding Refn's Bronson, Hardy has lined up an impressive assemblage of noteworthy upcoming roles, including taking over for Mel Gibson as the eponymous postapocalyptic badass in George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road.  Right now, though, he's in Pittsburgh filming The Dark Knight Rises with his Inception director Christopher Nolan.  The forthright actor recently talked about playing the musclebound baddie Bane and may very well have spilled some spoilerific beans about the story.
