Are you ready to rock?

Opening in theaters on June 15th is the big screen adaptation of the smash hit Broadway musical Rock of Ages, which was directed by Adam Shankman (Hairspray). The film truly features an all-star cast that includes Julianne Hough (Footloose), Diego Boneta (Mean Girls 2), Russell Brand (Arthur), Alec Baldwin (TV's 30 Rock), Bryan Cranston (Drive), Paul Giamatti (Sideways), Malin Akerman (Watchmen), Will Forte (MacGruber), Oscar winner Catherine Zeta-Jones (Chicago), singer Mary J. Blige, and international superstar Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol).

Rock of Ages tells the story of small town girl Sherrie (Hough) and city boy Drew (Boneta), who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. Much like the musical, the film features rock 'n' roll hits of the era from such legendary artists as Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, and White Snake

Paul Verhoeven's 1990 Total Recall famously included a woman with more than the usual number of breasts, and while this year's big budget remake is unlikely to include any three-breasted women, it definitely includes two famously beautiful actresses capable kicking all manner of ass.  There's photographic evidence of such today with seven new images from the new film, including new looks at Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale, with Biel doing a lot of gun-firing and Beckinsale piloting a flying car.

For his third feature as a director, Ben Affleck is getting away from Boston, the vividly-realized setting of his Gone Baby Gone and The Town.  Based on the first trailer for Argo, though, leaving Beantown isn't hurting Affleck one bit.  Warner Bros released the theatrical trailer and a teaser poster today, and while the latter is pretty standard, the former is outstanding, promising an intelligent, grown-up thriller with a sly, adroit sense of humor.

Earlier this week, Sony Pictures let the cat out of the bag with the reveal of the first trailer for Total Recall, the remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1990 adaption, which loosely took on Philip K. Dick short story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale.  Now that the cat's out of the bag, it's busily doing adorable cat-stuff.  By which I mean to say that there's now an official behind the scenes video for Total Recall online.

Last week, Sony Pictures released one of those teasers-for-a-teaser giving a glimpse at the theatrical trailer for its remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1990 crazyfest Total Recall.  Just as was promised at the time, the full trailer debuted today during the NBA that saw the Boston Celtics throw down on the Miami Heat, so of course the trailer is now available online.

Disappearing Farrell: 'Total Recall' Poster

Wednesday, 28 March 2012 13:07

Yesterday saw the release of a teaser for the teaser trailer for Total Recall.  Luckily, the increasingly popular trailer-for-a-trailer trend has yet to extend to posters, as Sony Pictures has gone ahead and followed up that tease with a full-on poster.

The poster gets audiences in on three crucial points.  The futuristic cityscape lets you know this is science fiction, fact that Colin Farrell is dissolving into cubes lets you know his identity is subject to technological confusion, and the gun in Farrell's hand let you know that the film will contain plenty of action.

Flying cars.  Colin Farrell being strapped into a familiar machine.  Sprawling futuristic mega-cities.  Kate Beckinsale wielding a big gun in slow motion.  Stormtrooper-looking goons.  Explosions.  Jessica Biel riding shotgun in one of the aforementioned flying cars.  Some more explosions. Colin Farrell leaping.  All this and a tiny bit more you can see in the thirty-ish-second long teaser for the Total Recall teaser trailer.

It's a time-honored sequel tradition, particularly with comedies, to take the principal characters to Europe at some point in the franchise.  This trope, most obviously demonstrated by the likes of National Lampoon's European Vacation and Deuce Bigelow: European Gigolo, is getting animated in this summer's Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted.  A trailer for the second sequel in the Madagascar series has arrived online, accompanied by a teaser poster.

Opening in theaters on March 9th is the new 3D science fantasy film John Carter, which is based on an eleven volume series of novels entitled Barsoom by legendary author Edgar Rice Burroughs. The movie is helmed by Academy Award winning director Andrew Stanton (WALL-E) and stars Taylor Kitsch (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) in the title role. John Carter also features a supporting cast that includes Lynn Collins (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man), Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3), Samantha Morton (Minority Report), Dominic West (300), Ciaran Hinds (Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance), Bryan Cranston (Drive), and Mark Strong (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).

IAR's Managing Editor Jami Philbrick recently had the rare chance to travel to Scottsdale, Arizona to speak with actors Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, and Dominic West about their work on John Carter. The actors discussed the new film, their characters, Kitsch's pressure to become John Carter, his first meeting with director Andrew Stanton, why Collins did not use the original source material to create her character, the film's use of visual effects, and West's attraction to playing villains.
